During the June search for the missing Polish submarine ORP Orzeł, the crew of the rescue vessel ORP Lech examined the wreck resembling the legendary vessel. Unfortunately, on the basis of their findings, it turned out that the wreck found was definitely not Orzeł. Today it is already known what the hydrographers of the Polish Navy found.
The North Sea, just like the Baltic, is the eternal battleground of successive fleets. No wonder, then, that while looking for a particular wreck we may come across another one, which at first glance is deceptively similar. This is exactly what happened in this case.
Unfortunately, what was supposed to be the Eagle turned out to be the wreck of a British submarine from the First World War. J6 was sunk on October 15, 1918 as a result of a mistaken shelling by another British vessel. The information about the find was passed on to the Royal Navy, whose representative offered support in the search for ORP Orzeł.
The wreck lies at around 70m, so exploration was not easy. Before a team of divers was sent to thoroughly explore the designated fragments, the data provided by the sonar and ROV were first analysed. The material collected together ruled out the possibility of finding the Eagle, but was used to identify the wreck.
It remains for us to wait for the new year and the results of further exploration, because I don’t think anyone can imagine giving up efforts today? The year 2013 ignited hopes and expectations and the achievement of the goal seemed very real. Let us hope that we will not have to wait long for the “return” of the Eagle.
