About the film

Six-year-old Bi has been panicky about water since her younger brother drowned. Little Oscar was taken away by a flood, and his body was never found. After the loss of his son, her father, Karl Klingert, went into withdrawal and devoted himself to developing the world’s first atmospheric diving suit.

The first demonstration of the suit is coming up. If successful, Klingert gets a grant and moves to England with her family. Bi thinks her brother is still alive and if they leave, she will never find them. That’s why she believes the jumpsuit is the monster that took over her father. With the help of her new friend Peter, a little rascal from the river, she tries to destroy it before the whole family leaves Wroclaw forever.

Karl Klingert

Karl Heinrich Klingert lived in Breslau between 1760 and 1828, where he graduated from the Protestant St. Mary Magdalene Gymnasium and worked as a teacher of physics and mathematics, both at this gymnasium and at today’s Academy of Fine Arts. In his work he made experimental models and instruments for many Wroclaw educational institutions, including the Astronomical Observatory of the Wroclaw University.

Klingert was particularly interested in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and applied physics. He conducted experiments with electricity and air. Among other things, he invented a pump for releasing oxygen from water, a lighter with compressed air, a lamp for underwater work, a ladder and a fire escape basket, a thermometer and a compass for blind people, a prosthetic arm, a chair for rehabilitation exercises, a wheelchair.

His greatest work was the first atmospheric diving suit built in 1797, which was initially intended for cleaning the Oder riverbed. With his work, Klingert contributed to the development of free d iving, practised today by several million people around the world.

The makers ensure that the film pays great attention to historical details, including a portrait of Wrocław. Robert Heś, a historian from Wrocław’s National Museum, has provided support in this regard.
