The international symposium “Boats and ships in archaeology” (International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology – ISBSA). This is the fourteenth edition of the conference, dedicated to marine and underwater archaeologists and the second one organised by the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk.

The organisation of the International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology is the fruit of many years of work and achievements of scientists gathered around the institution. The five-day symposium will be opened by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Professor Małgorzata Omilanowska, who has assumed patronage of the conference.

This year’s symposium programme is dedicated to the transformation of ancient shipbuilding and boatbuilding. Researchers from Europe, Asia, the United States, Canada and Australia will discuss the evolution of boat and ship construction and its impact on archaeological heritage and historical and geographical conditions.

Professor Yaacov Kahanov from Haifa University is coming with a lecture on the Ma’agan Michael wreck. Dr Fred Hocker will explain the subject of the reconstruction of cannons from the historic sailing ship “Vasa”, and Professor Eric Rieth from France will present the subject of 17th century French inland ships from the Somme River.

Iwona Pomian, Head of the Underwater Research Department of the National Museum of Art will discuss the latest achievements and plans of the Museum related to archaeological discoveries. Tomasz Bednarz and Janusz Różycki will present the results of their research on the wrecks of the Gulf of Gdańsk using photogrammetry and 3D documentation, and Dr. Waldemar Ossowski will present the problem of shipwrecks from the Vistula as an example of the history of the long-distance transportation system. Krzysztof Zamościński from the Department of Maritime Ethnology at the National Museum of Art will present the subject of boats made of leather in the past in the Lower Dnieper region.
