Further interesting archaeological finds in the West Pomeranian region

From a body of water in the Gryfino district, underwater archaeologists from the University of Warsaw excavated remains of weapons dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries. According to preliminary findings, the artefacts found in the waters of the lake belonged to the Goths. According to archaeologists, the discovery is sensational as it is the first finding of this kind in our country.

The excavated objects include 30 arrowheads, spears and axes. Interestingly, the find was made by an inhabitant of Gryfino, who later informed his lecturers from the University of Warsaw about it.

“It is a corroded, small piece of metal, it is very small in size, the size of two fingers, but it is unique. Anitem has been found that does not exist in previous archaeological studies,” explains Dr Tomasz Nowakiewicz from the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Warsaw

“These were not pacifist people or Hare Krishna warriors. These were very warlike communities that had conquered half a continent. Weapons were not placed in graves or anything easily identifiable because of some cultural taboo ,” Nowakiewicz explains.

“The discovery site has a special significance. These waters were sacred and held in special reverence,” adds Dr Nowakiewicz

At the moment, conservation work and cataloguing the finds are underway. As Radio Szczecin reports on its website, the found objects, after being secured and described, will be transferred to one of the museums in the West Pomeranian region.

The research was a joint undertaking organised by the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Warsaw and the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences Branch in Szczecin.
