Freediving world records during the Xibalba competition!

The Xibalba freediving competition held in Mexico was full of sensational results. During the four days of competition, four disciplines – CWT, CWT Bi fins, FIM and CNF – were contested and many new national records were set, as well as two new world records!

TheXibalba International Freediving Competition, a competition held under the auspices of AIDA International, saw the participation of 25 athletes from around the world. From 23-28 April, four days of breathtaking (literally!) competition were held.

The biggest event of the Xibalba competition was certainly the women’s CWT Bi fins competition. Colombia’s Sofia Gomez set the world record with a dive to 81 metres, but her plans for victory were thwarted by Japan’s Sayuri Kinoshita. With a great dive to 82 metres, the representative from the cherry blossom country set her second world record of the day and ultimately won the entire competition.

The competition was conducted in ideal, if not almost sterile conditions. No waves or currents, only crystal clear water in the Xibalba cenote, which is 92 metres deep and has a temperature of 26°C. It is hard to imagine a better place for a freediving competition.

The whole event was very well prepared by the organisers. Appropriate underwater lighting, live video transmission and of course the safety of the competitors were taken care of by an experienced security team.
