Frederic Swierczynski is about to break the World Record for cave diving!

French technical diver Frederic Swieczynski’s goal is to break the now age-old World Record in cave diving of 282.6 metres, which has been held by Nuno Gomes since 1992. The South African diver booked the best result for many years, reaching the bottom of the then deepest cave in the world – Boesmansgat. The whole situation may change in the coming weeks, as the Frenchman’s goal is round 300 metres.

Frederic chose Red Lake(Crveno jezero) in Croatia as the location for his record attempt. It is a sinkhole near the town of Imotski, which owes its name to the brown-red colour of the surrounding cliffs, coloured with iron oxides. The formation of the lake is attributed to the collapse of the ceiling of one of the caves. The nearby Blue Lake(Modro jez ero or Plavo jezero) was formed in a similar way.

The dive itself will be an extremely tough challenge. To this day, there are only a few divers who have crossed the 300-metre mark. Each of them, when describing their dive, mentioned the extremely hard test for the body, which was diving to such enormous depths. Just imagine that for every square centimetre of the diver’s body, a pressure of 30 kg is exerted!

Nuno Gomes, who until a few years ago held the deepest open-circuit record (318.25m), mentioned in a conversation with me that HPNS (high pressure nervous syndrome) was already reaching a level where accidentally spitting out the automat could end tragically, as he would not be able to put it back in his mouth.

The dive will be conducted on a closed circuit and is scheduled for a round 300 minutes. The habitat will also be used during the trial, as Red Lake has extremely low temperatures, dropping as low as 8ºC.

The immersion is scheduled for 6 May 2017. Exactly three days, before Frederic Swierczynski’s 44th birthday. Hopefully, in addition to another birthday, he will have an extra occasion to celebrate, and a special gift.
