The HTMS “Sttatakut” was built at the Commercial Ironworks shipyard in Portland. She entered service with the US Navy, measuring 48 metres, on 27 February 1944, as a large landing barge – LCI(L) and took part, among other things, in the seizure and occupation of the southern part of Palau on 6 September – 18 October 1944.

Then on 31 December 1944 reclassified as an artillery landing barge – LCI(G), she took part in the attack on Iwo Jima Island, between 19 February and 30 April 1945. After another reclassification, this time as a mortar barge – LCI(M), “Sattakut” took part in the battle for Okinawa Island, 26 March – 14 June 1945. In 1946r. 742 was transferred to the Thai Navy.

For its service in World War II, the ship was honoured by being awarded three battle stars (battlestar – ed.)

The wreck of HTMS “Sattakut” is located approx. 40 metres south of Hin Peewee. The vessel rests flush on her keel, with the bow pointing in a north-westerly direction. The wreck starts at a depth of about 20 metres and reaches about 32 metres at its deepest point. It is one of Koh Tao’s most visited diving attractions.

The sinking of HTMS “Sattakut”, as an artificial reef, was sponsored by the Thai government, as part of the development of dive tourism in the Koh Tao area. The operation was carried out in 2012 and since then the wreck has been pleasing the eyes of divers visiting the region.
