Diver died while diving in Lake Zbiczno

The local press is reporting a tragedy that occurred yesterday, Sunday 22 October. During a dive in Zbiczno Lake, one of two divers exploring the lake died. When the man failed to surface at the agreed time, the other diver and a colleague securing the dive on shore decided to call for help.

At around 14:40 the fire brigade’s duty officer received a report of a missing diver in Lake Zbiczno. Police officers who arrived at the scene found that two men had gone into the water. When one of them failed to swim out after several minutes, the victim’s friends decided to call for help.

The search and rescue action was conducted by the Water and Diving Rescue Group from Fire and Rescue Unit No. 1 in Bydgoszcz with the use of three boats. A robot belonging to the Voivodeship Headquarters of the SFS in Toruń was also used to assist in the search for the missing diver.

After several hours of searching, at around 7pm, firefighters fished out the body of a dead diver. The 47-year-old man was an inhabitant of Brodnica, from which the lake is about 13 km away. Experts are now working to establish the course of events and the reasons for the tragedy.
