This is yet another story of a diver caught up in drug smuggling. This time the perpetrator was caught when he tried to smuggle nearly $2m worth of cocaine from Mexico to the US. Evelio Padilla Zepeda, 28, tried to slip unnoticed through the All American Cannal near the town of Calexico, California.
Before a court in San Diego, a Honduran man quickly pleaded guilty to charges of smuggling with intent to further distribute drugs. Three other men who assisted in the smuggling escaped.
After a thorough investigation, officers managed to locate an underwater channel connecting the All American Cannal aqueduct to one of the houses. The tunnel itself was almost 50m long and had a ventilation system, lighting and had… railway tracks laid!
The Padilla example is just another pebble in a very large pile. Border guards on the southern border of the US are constantly waging a fierce war against drug smugglers who resort to ever more elaborate and daring solutions.
The detainee explained that he was supposed to help 3 people cross the border, but it turned out on the spot that the “job” would consist of something completely different. As he himself testified, he agreed because there was no other option.
Now US officials will try to determine who created and used the tunnel to smuggle drugs.
