DAN has announced the selection of Frauke Tillmans as director of research. Tillmans most recently worked at the German Naval Medical Institute, where she was a researcher and project manager in the experimental medicine department. At DAN, she will work on personalised, research-based safety strategies in diving.

Tillmans began her career as a diver-scientist in 2007 in northern Germany. When she finished her master’s degree, she left genetics research and got involved with the scientific diving programme at her university. This led her to become a diving instructor in 2010.

While attending one of the conferences, she had the opportunity to visit the German hyperbaric chamber Hydra 2000 in Kiel, and after talking to one of the doctors at the centre, she decided to apply for an internship. Here she started her professional career on the borderline between her scientific interests and her personal passions: diving physiology and hyperbaric medicine.

She is the author of many articles and research papers. Outside the laboratory she also works in the volunteer fire service.
