Cleaning the Clay Pit in Golkow

On 22 April 2012, as part of the “International Earth Day 2012″ celebrations, a water reservoir cleaning action was organised in Gołkowo near Warsaw. A group of about 100 people came to the shore willing to clean the reservoir and its surroundings.

Although the visibility and conditions were not very encouraging, more than 20 divers volunteered to clean up the action underwater! Visibility was almost zero and most of the time, the divers operated in the dark, trying to track larger objects lying on the bottom.

The result of their efforts was a full container of rubbish. Among the items fished out were tyres, bottles and cans, but there were also other things no longer needed by people, which according to some sick logic ended up at the bottom of Glinianka.

The reservoir itself, as established among local residents, is about 10m deep. The divers recorded this depth on their computers, almost perfectly in the middle of the reservoir. Despite the darkness that prevailed at this depth, visibility oscillated around 0.5m.

This was yet another action of cleaning dive sites in the Mazovia region. The team of divers informally associated as the Group Exploring Podwarszawskie Diving Sites, once again, gave an example of how to take care of their immediate surroundings.

Support for the day was provided by Eco Choice Foundation, Raja Dive Centre, X-Divers group, Safe Water Associacion, Barefoot Wine and Ekon.
