Cave diving in Mallorca

Mallorca is the largest island in the Balearic archipelago, located in the Mediterranean Sea and subject to the jurisdiction of the Spanish crown. Going there on holiday, in addition to classic diving in the sea, we will have the opportunity to visit the local diving caves, which are really quite a lot.

Based on the accounts of those who have had the opportunity to admire the cave attractions of Mallorca, we could say that the island is full of caves. This is due to the geological structure of the island, which mostly consists of Mesozoic limestone, prone to erosion.

Cova de Sa Gleda is Majorca’s largest cave. It is also the longest diving cave in Europe and the third in the world (longer systems are found on the Yucatan Peninsula and in Florida).

Unlike their counterparts in Mexico and the USA, the caves in Mallorca are not a very popular destination and are far from being a Mecca for cave divers. This situation is certainly influenced by the fact that the descents to most of them are difficult to access and thus divers rarely decide to visit them.

Cova de Sa Gleda, is a very interesting and varied cave. In addition, with the right equipment, its exploration can last for hours. This is due to the fact that it is quite a shallow cave (10-25m), where the water temperature is about 17-20°C.

Below is a video by Konrad Dubiel of the exploration of the aforementioned cave:
