On July 21, members of the “Ayas” and “Armenian extreme” clubs, led by Rafael Mkrtchyan, set a new world record, in diving above sea level in the northern hemisphere. The dive took place in the waters of Lake Kari, located at 3207m, which have been frozen for 20 years. The divers descended to the bottom, located at a depth of 9m, and penetrated most of it.

“We stayed underwater for 1h20min, which allowed us to explore 70% of the bottom. During our expedition the air temperature was 5°Cand the watertemperature was3°C. The lake froze over 20 years ago and as a result, the life in it is not very developed, but we managed to discover several new species,” – said Mkrtchyan

The world record holder, considering the southern hemisphere, remains the legendary Jaques Yves Cousteau. His expedition to Lake Ticitaca, located in the Andes at an altitude of 3812m, was the first and only expedition of its kind so far.

Diving in such conditions, is extremely dangerous, due to the high altitude, oxygen deficiency and rapid pressure changes.
