Archaeologists try to identify mysterious wreck

In the waters surrounding the Scottish coast, near Drumberg, lies a very interesting find at a depth of 15m. It consists of a piece of a wooden hull, an anchor, but also 3 cannons and cannon balls. These are probably the remains of a Dutch ship, which sank about 300 years ago.

Local underwater enthusiasts tracked down the wreck as early as the 1990s, but until recently no one had the opportunity to conduct research on the wreck resting in the waters of Edrachillis Bay.

On 18 March this year, the dive site was granted emergency ‘protected’ status and was put forward as one of seven Scottish wrecks on which to establish protected marine history areas.

The above status means that the wreck is a monument and as a special national asset is under special protection. The status the find has today is valid only for 2 years. During this time research and consultations will be carried out, on the basis of which a decision will be made to permanently protect this place.

Most of the questions about the vessel are still shrouded in mystery and oblivion. Perhaps the artifacts found near the wreck will help to change this state of affairs and soon we will know the history of the ship and its crew. According to experts, the cannons found at the bottom resemble those cast in Sweden and used by the Dutch.
