A new island has emerged in the volcanic island archipelago of Ogasawara. The first eruption of an underwater volcano in almost 40 years took place there. An identical situation took place in 1974, when a huge volcanic eruption gave birth to the new, as yet uninhabited island of Nishino-Shima.
The Bangkok Post newspaper reports that smoke was spotted by the Japanese Coast Guard on Wednesday morning, November 20, although the Japan Meteorological Agency does not rule out that the eruption has been going on for some time but has only now been observed.
The new land uplifted by the volcano is now 200 metres wide and a pillar of smoke rises above it, reaching up to about 660 metres above sea level. The eruption took place just 500 metres from Nishino-Shima Island, thus creating New Land in the archipelago, which runs along the boundary of the Pacific tectonic plate commonly known as the ‘ring of fire’.
The eruption of an underwater volcano can be said to have given Japan a small piece of new territory, but time will tell what fate awaits the new island before it is named.
