In the past we have already reported on the finding of a specific wreck just in Stockholmbut also in Italian Ostia or in the ruins of… the World Trade Center. This time the repair works of the wharf in the centre of the Swedish capital, made it possible to locate the wrecks of 5 vessels, up to 20m long, whose origin dates back to the 16th-18th centuries.

As in previous cases, the whole case was handled by specialists, in this case from the Swedish Maritime Museum. In their own words, the found vessels are in excellent condition and, in addition, a number of artefacts such as tools, coins and glass-blown vessels have been located nearby.

“I’ve never before had the opportunity to be involved in finding so many well-preserved wrecks and artefacts. It’s very exciting as the work continues to move forward, but it’s much more difficult to carry out this work in winter and we need to be very careful, ” said Jim Hansson, the museum’s project manager.

So far, it has not been possible to establish why the boats sank. The find sheds further light on Stockholm’s past and gives a more complete picture of how the capital of the Three Crowns looked and functioned.

“Since these vessels, sunk at a time when the port was in use, I suspect they may have had something to do with the navy,” – said another museum employee Andreas Olsson.

For the Swedes, a great year is closing, given the diving and wreck discoveries. Legendary ships have been successfully located Mars i Svardetbut also some minor ones that are still waiting to be examined more closely, and it all coincided with the round anniversary, the 50th anniversary of the fished the magnificent Vasa ship.
