The GEOMAR Helmholz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel decided to use the latest version of the Scubapro MK25 Evo first stage in a very interesting experiment. Although there may have been some apprehension regarding the design of the experiment, it was not necessary as the equipment performed flawlessly.
JAGO is the only manned vehicle to explore the deep sea. The vessel, used by the GEOMAR Helmholz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel, usually operates at depths of no more than 400 metres.
Some of the components and equipment are located outside the main body of the vessel, in a special chamber (thinner walls due to weight restrictions). The accumulators, motors and hydraulic pumps in this chamber can implode or leak at depths greater than 400 metres.
The solution to the situation is to use the first stage, which balances the pressure so that the vessel can safely go below the 400-metre limit without damaging the components and equipment mentioned.
Previously, the depth limit to which this system could safely function was unknown. The answer was provided by a test using the Scubapro MK25 Evo first stage, housed in a special pressure tank. The device in question allows pressure to be generated at a depth of 10,000 metres (1,000 bar).
A total of 11 repetition cycles were conducted. During 10 of these, the minimum depth limit was set at 1500m (150 bar). During the 11th test, the limit was moved to 3110m (311 bar). During none of the tests carried out, any deviation from the standard was found and the MK 25 Evo performed faultlessly throughout!
Scubapro brand representatives have already released a statement saying how extremely proud they are of the results of the experiment.
