Students from the Henryk Sienkiewicz School Complex in Kołobrzeg have decided to print in 3D technology a model of one of the Baltic shipwrecks lying on the Kołobrzeg riverbed. It is the wreck of an artillery ferry from World War II, known among divers as the popular “Kanonierka”.

To carry out their plan, the pupils turned to the Museum of Polish Arms in Kołobrzeg with an idea.

[blockquote style=”2″]”These are extraordinary young people. With potential and full of willingness to act,” praises Aleksander Ostasz, director of the Museum of Polish Arms in Kołobrzeg. The canon boat, a German artillery ferry, lies at the bottom of the sea north of Kołobrzeg harbour. Now, thanks to the work of teenagers, you can see exactly what it looks like”[/blockquote].

It took four months of hard work to go from words to a completed 3D mock-up design. During this time, the students dedicated nearly 800 hours to achieve the final result.

The painstaking process of designing the model had to start with scanning the seabed mesh. Then, the obtained data was implemented into a programme that carries out graphic processing and creates 3D animations. The next step was to divide the obtained model into 25 smaller elements that could be produced by a 3D printer. After assembling them, a model of the wreck of the “Kanonierka” was obtained.

It took a long time to print the parts themselves, as all the details were perfectly reproduced. Some of the 25 elements that make up the whole layout were printed for almost 24 hours!

The final stage of the work was to put the whole thing together, glue it together and then sand out any irregularities and paint it to reflect the actual state.

The official handover of the model to the Museum of Polish Arms in Kołobrzeg is to take place tomorrow.

But this is not the end! The Museum is about to sign a contract for the creation and handing over of further models. Using their experience to date, the students will be able to further develop their skills by creating models of other shipwrecks.

[blockquote style=”2″]”With initiatives like this you can do something cool. I will help these young people as much as I can. Such attitudes among young people should be rewarded,” Ostasz announces.”[/blockquote]
