An expedition to the wreck of the German steamer SS Karlsruhe organised by the Polish technical diving group Baltictech is gaining momentum.

Last Tuesday, a brief summary of their activities was posted from the Glomar Vantage vessel, which the expedition members set out to sea. After exploration of a sailing shipwreckwhich the Baltictech divers discovered near the wreck of the Karlsruhe, it was time for the right action.

During the second and third days of the expedition, both the divers and the ROV team had their hands full. As a result, they managed to set up a railing to the wreck of the Karlsruhe, which makes the work of the diving team much easier. In turn, the reconnaissance work carried out using the ROV remote controlled robotROVs made it possible to thoroughly survey the area around the bow of the SS Karlsruhe. During the exploration further crates, which the German steamer was carrying, were also found.

Day two and day three are behind us. We did a great job. The main rope was placed on the wreck, which makes the job easier for us divers. With the ROV we explored a large area of the bottom in front of the bow and we keep finding new boxes.

There is no doubt that all the work done by the members of the expedition deserves enormous credit. The underwater conditions are quite difficult and the wreck of the SS Karlsruhe is heavily sedimented. This is where the class of the individual team members and the experience they have accumulated over the years comes out.

We have already filmed and inventoried the wreck from the outside. This is not easy because old and new nets are everywhere.

What is hidden inside the wreck?

We eagerly await further news from the exploration of the wreck. Especially that, according to the announcements made by Baltictech, it is now time to look at the contents of the hold.

From tomorrow we focus on the holds, we’ll see if we find anything new.

In recent days, the Baltic Sea has been exceptionally kind and we hope that this good weather will continue until the end of the Karlsruhe 2021 expedition. This will certainly translate into underwater work, which we are all very curious about.
