As planned, divers from the 12th minesweeper Squadron of the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla carried out an operation to recover and secure a huge aerial bomb. The whole incident took place near Szczecin’s Old Town, opposite the Customs Office.

After several reconnaissance dives, whose total duration was close to 20 hours, it was found that the located object is an aerial bomb from the Second World War. The bomb was found to weigh approximately 1t, almost half of which was explosive. Fortunately, the area around the unexploded bomb was ‘clean’ and no objects were found which could hinder the excavation of the dangerous find.

The operation to retrieve the unexploded bomb began by attaching specially imported displacement balloons (idrodynamics) to it, which were then filled with air. In this way, the unexploded bomb was detached from the bottom and transported to a place where it could be retrieved by a crane operator. The bomb was then lowered into a special cargo box, a vehicle normally used for transporting hazardous materials.

The unwanted World War II remnant was then transported to the military training ground in Drawsko Pomorskie, where it will be detonated.

Divers from the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla, members of the Voivodship Crisis Management Team in Szczecin and sappers from the 5th Engineering Regiment in Szczecin-Podjuchy should be applauded for their efficient operation.
