As announced, the hull of the ship HMCS Annapolis was sunk on Saturday 4 April. Vancouver thus lived to see its first artificial reef. The vessel’s final voyage was accompanied by crowds of onlookers gathered on shore and on many boats.

The sap team this afternoon had an audience like few others. Real crowds were drawn to Halkett Bay. No wonder, after all it was a huge event for the local community, not just the diving community. After many years of efforts and legal battles, the sinking of a real warship had finally been achieved.

According to the organisers of the event, a total of 200 boats were in the water to watch the sinking. Among the many divers and local residents, there were also former sailors who had served on HMCS Annapolis in the past. The live coverage on the internet was followed by another 4,000 people!

“It was a magical day! It was raining as we drove to our destination, but when we arrived the sky cleared up. It looked as if the clouds in the sky had parted so that the last rays of the sun could say goodbye to Annapolis. It will now become a new home for many creatures from the surrounding waters and a dream destination for recreational and wreck diving,” – concluded Rick Wall, spokesman for the association.

In contrast to the entire journey that preceded the moment of sinking, less than 2min passed from the detonation to the disappearance of the ship under the surface of the water.
