As we grow, we dive deeper and in more demanding conditions. Polish lakes or wreck diving, forcing us to have the right equipment, including lights with adequate power for the situation under water.
Anyone who has been underwater at least once in their native waters knows that the stronger the headlamp the more you will see. Unfortunately, the greater the power and quality, the higher the price. What to do if you don’t want to spend several thousand zlotys on a torch? It’s best to look for a reasonable substitute, which will satisfy our needs.
Yellow Star 12, manufactured by Yellow Diving, is a torch that is an intermediate product between a backup and a HID/LED light using canister power. It draws its energy from a built-in rechargeable Li-Ion battery, illuminating with 12W light. This is a very interesting product for recreational divers who like to go a bit deeper or explore wrecks.
The HID filament, gives us a focused light, with a soft glow, with a natural colour. Thanks to this specification, colours under water are not “distorted”, i.e. we see them as they really are. The illumination angle is 6º. The torch can operate for almost 4 hours on a fully charged battery, and the light concentration is always the same, regardless of the battery charge.
Simplicity of design, is the theme of the Yellow Star 12. It has a large and easy to use switch, located on the back of the torch. Right next to it we have a port for connecting the charger (included), which is hidden under a sealed cap for the time of diving. On the whole, there is an additional rubber, flexible and tight cover, to minimize the possibility of dirt and sedimentation of all kinds of debris.
The only drawback, for some divers, may be the way of holding this model, but this issue can also be solved. We can easily replace the standard “handle” with the popular Goodman grip. For belaying, the torch is also equipped with a “loop” which you can put on your wrist to prevent the loss of your light.
Now let’s sum up the Yellow Diving product a bit and get all the parameters together. As I have already written, this is a 12W HID torch. The light has a colour temperature of 6500ºK, while the luminance is 550lm. The manufacturer estimates the lifetime of the filament at 500h. It is powered by a rechargeable Li-Ion 4400 mAh battery which provides 220 minutes of operation. Yellow Star 12 retains its tightness to a depth of 100m. All this is contained in an object just under 20cm long and 8cm in diameter, which weighs 800g on the surface and only 30g when submerged.
The torch performed flawlessly during diving on wrecks up to the depth of 40m, giving full comfort that lighting should provide. It was equally effective in illuminating the darkness of Polish lakes, allowing us to enjoy, for example, the view of hulled lakes in Lake Hancza. Yellow Diving’s product is dedicated to those who need a solid light at a price oscillating around 1000pln and not taking up too much space.
