On a sunny afternoon and as an incentive to dive in the coming weekend, we have today another report from dives conducted under the project “(Wy)nurzeni. Wigry expedition”. Materials concerning diving in not very well known, and sometimes even pristine in terms of diving areas of Suwalszczyzna come from the authors of the project and can be found in full on the website of the Jagnablue Diving School.
Emil’s birthday turned out to be an excellent reason for further revision of the lakes from the project (Wy)nurzeni. Wigry expedition. Today we went to Gałęziste, the lake where it all started. Amazing weather ordered by the jubilator, sun and peace and quiet presented Suwalszczyzna in all its glory.
A grey heron flew out to greet us, followed by two hawks. It was an amazing sight and then we ran out of Sudors with their cameras and super lenses. While assembling our gear, we decided to swim to the right, as the left side was explored in winter. The plan was simple – we were looking for noble crayfish, maybe it would work.
The clarity is still not stunning, but this does not discourage us in our search and we look into all the nooks and crannies. There is the first crawfish we encounter, but unfortunately it is not what we are looking for, American ones we do not like. On the way we meet a very large number of mussels that show their “teeth” which looks amazing. After 20 minutes, the first ascent and check where we are, and here is a surprise because half of the lake is behind us. There was still a lot of gas left, so the decision to go further was quick.
Suddenly we come across the first traces of beavers, and after a while I try to call Emil because I’m curious about some branches stuck in the bottom. I ask him, what is it? To me it looks like the beginning of a feeding ground, and Emil says that it is an old platform, but we will have to wait for an expert opinion. We continue sailing and finally the first fish appear, a few very skittish perches, but no crayfish at all. We reach the beach and it turns out that we’ve circumnavigated the lake. We check the computer and there’s 68 minutes of diving, that’s what we call reconnaissance. Full of energy and smiles, we get out of the water and are already planning the next dives.
Diving in the Petronajac Lake
How can you spend the 3rd of May Constitution Day? Under water, of course. Together with Sudavians we went to the lake Pietronajć as a part of our project. It turned out that many locals don’t even know it exists. The lake was created by pingo, i.e. by melting a lens of ice.
We left the cars at the edge of the forest and all the equipment had to be carried to the water. Cylinders on our backs, bags in our hands and off we went. My good friend Pawel helped us today, thanks a lot for the extra muscle :). On the way we had a few obstacles and the first one was crossing the river. With a bottle on your back and lead in the jacquet it is not so easy. Then we climbed uphill and pushed our way through the bushes, and finally we descended the mountain and there was the longed-for lake. After a short rest, we assembled our equipment and agreed on a dive plan, namely to go right and then head for the island, which is located in the middle of the lake.
The longed-for entry into the water and there is joy. Hubert decided to swim around the tank on the surface, and Emil and I went underwater. From the very beginning we used torches because the visibility was maximum 1 meter. It was great anyway. We were probably the first people to dive here, because we know nothing about others before us.
We encountered a lot of fallen trees, searched for crayfish and fish, unfortunately neither was visible. After 20 minutes and reaching 6 meters we surfaced near the island and there was Hubert lounging on it. We were very curious about such a small island in the middle of the lake, which is said to have been there for several years.
A complete surprise here, as the island is nailed to the bottom with stilts, such a surprise, probably the park employees took care of it. After getting out of the water and getting our equipment together we had to go back to our cars uphill, downhill and cross the river. Hubert was short of water, so he decided to come back in his super warm wetsuit and take another dip in the Maniówka river.
After an exhausting return, Miłosz took his bow out of the car and the men quickly got into a target shooting competition. The Sudanese were better today, they hit the target twice, but next time we will beat them. In the meantime we plan where the expedition will visit next time.
