Workers from Global Marine Exploration Inc. have made an unusual find in the waters around Cape Canaveral, Florida. According to media reports, three shipwrecks from the period between the mid-16th and 17th centuries and many related artefacts were found underwater. Until now, the Cape was mainly famous for NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Flight Centre, but now it will have the chance to become famous as an interesting archaeological site.

Speaking to reporters, President of Global Marine Exploration Inc. – Robert H. Pritchett said that he was extremely proud and happy about the discovery. As he assured, the remains of the three unidentified vessels contain quite a few interesting items that may tell a little more about the origin of the wrecks.

Artifacts found include three heavily decorated bronze cannons, nineteen iron cannons, twelve anchors, a 39-inch grinding wheel, as well as ammunition and ballast.

But this is nothing compared to the find that aroused the greatest interest! During the exploration of the site, a marble column containing the emblem of the Kingdom of France was found. The column certainly dates from the early colonial period, since the kingdom itself ceased to exist on 3 September 1792.

Work around Cape Canaveral began in May 2016, following information from recreational divers who in September 2015. They encountered cannons in the area. Global Marine Exploration Inc. proceeded to search for the historic wrecks after receiving the appropriate permits from the State of Florida.

Already during the first reconnaissances, divers Thomas Riffaud and Juan Bautista came across bronze cannons, which were then examined more closely in the presence of archaeologist Jim Sinclair. This was followed by a mapping of the area and photo, video and sketch material of the objects found on the bottom.

Initial speculation as to the origin of the wrecks directed archaeologists to Jean Ribault’s history of the fleet in 1565, but later evidence allowed this theory to be disproved.

The State of Florida has already announced its willingness to work with Global Marine Exploration Inc. to conduct further exploration and identify the find.
