In the waters of the Baltic Sea, in the south of Sweden, local divers have found a wreck that is most likely the remains of an English Halifax II bomber. The discovery took place in the summer, but has only now been reported to the media. The divers came across the wreckage during a university-sponsored expedition to study the local flora and fauna.

The coastguard, noted information about an object located about 10km off Kämpinge Bay. When divers went underwater to scope out the situation, they found metal fragments of the wreck scattered within a 100m radius.

“When we went down to the bottom, we were expecting to find some kind of boulder, but after we had peeled away the layer of algae, it turned out that we were dealing with objects made of metal,” – Lasse Carlsson, one of the divers, said.

“This is a very interesting find. It isthe first time in a very long time that an aircraft wreck has been found in Swedish waters with machine gun ammunition ,” said investigator Kjell Andersson.

These munitions were one of the reasons why the discovery was kept secret for so long. Scientists were afraid of divers, who might not only handle the find the wrong way, but also harm themselves. Now Swedish military divers are collecting documentation from the wreck site, after which they will decide whether the munitions should be brought to the surface or detonated underwater.

It is not 100% certain, but the discovery of the wreckage is linked to the reported downing of a plane in the area during World War II – August 3, 1943. According to a local Malmö newspaper, the plane was struck by lightning, resulting in the loss of 2 of the 4 engines. Seeing no other option, the crew decided to leave the aircraft over neutral Swedish territory.

According to sources, all the airmen survived and after 6 months of internment, were sent back to the UK.
