For the first time in nearly a decade and a half, a manned mission was carried out to the most famous wreck in the world – the RMS “Titanic”. Not only did the expedition to the remains of the liner remain unpublicised by the organisers, but now, almost a week after it took place, there is little information about it.

What we do know, however, is that participants in the Five Deeps project, which aims to visit the deepest parts of all 5 oceans (with a dive in the Arctic Ocean still to be completed), used the DSV Limiting Factor underwater vehicle and were the first people on the wreck of the ‘Titanic’ since 2005.

Although the wreck has since been explored by an unmanned vehicle, this was in 2010. We are still waiting for photographic and video documentation and a report on the latest exploration. As soon as they are published, we will certainly report on the most important details.

The wreck of the RMS “Titanic” lies at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, at a depth of more than 3,800 metres. It was found in 1985 by Robert Ballard and his team. Unfortunately, the wreck is in a terrible state and the prognosis for its future is very bad. It is all due to the microbe Halomonas titanicae, which is eating away at the ship and producing rust that is consuming the structure of the ‘Titanic’.
