Wreck of 1942 cruiser found – video

Paul Allen and his team have covered another wreck! This time the crew of the R/V “Petrel” brought back information about the location of the final resting place of the US Navy light cruiser USS “Juneau”. The ship was sunk in the Pacific in 1942, and of the crew of almost 700 sailors, only 10 were rescued.

Luck smiled on the searchers on 17 March 2018. It was then that they came across an unknown wreck in the waters of the South Pacific, near the Solomon Islands, at a depth of 4,200 metres. After locating the vessel through the AUV’s side scan sonar, an ROV was sent to investigate the discovery. The searchers determined that they were dealing with the wreck of the USS “Juneau”, a US ship sunk 76 years ago.

The USS Juneau was sunk on 13 November 1942, at the Battle of Guadalcanal. On that day, US Navy units clashed with ships of the Nippon Kaigun, i.e. the Imperial Japanese Navy, in the next stage of the struggle for supremacy in the waters of the Pacific. The damaged “Juneau” was on her way back to base when she was tracked and sunk by the Japanese submarine I-26.

The heavily battered cruiser received a truly lethal blow from the Japanese submariners. The torpedo, which reached its target, caused an explosion, after which the American ship broke in half and sank in less than 30 seconds! As a result of the entire incident, 687 sailors died.

However, it is rarely mentioned that more than 100 people survived the attack and could have done so. Unfortunately, the US Navy did not take the risk of sending any vessel to the area for several days. After 8 days of the sinking of the “Juneau” only 10 people could be saved.

Among the nearly 700 dead aboard the USS Juneau were the five Sullivan brothers. After the incident, the US Navy command ordered that the siblings be separated when assigned to ships, so as to reduce the likelihood that none would survive the war.

Their deaths were also the reason for the introduction of the Sole Survivor Policy. The idea was that after the death of one relative, the death of other family members serving in the armed forces would be prevented. I’m sure most readers will remember a similar situation from the Hollywood super-production Saving Private Ryan.

Sullivanbrothers

To commemorate the sacrifice of the Sullivan family, two US Navy ships were named in honour of the fallen brothers. The first was the destroyer USS “The Sullivans” (DD-537), and the second was also the destroyer USS “The Sullivans” (DDG-68). This was the only case in history where US ships were named after a group of individuals.

Despite much greater losses in equipment and men, it was the Americans who achieved their objective and could feel victorious in the Battle of Guadalcanal. The shelling of the airfield, which played a key role in US dominion in the surrounding skies, was prevented.

USS “Juneau” was a light cruiser of the Atlanta type. The keel for her construction was laid on 27 May 1940, in the shipyard of Federal Shipbuilding Company, and the construction was completed on 25 October 1941. The ship entered service on 14 February 1942. The ship measured 165 m long and 15.9 m wide, with a draught of 5 m and a displacement of 6000 t. The unit developed a maximum speed of 32 knots, giving fire from 16 guns cal. 127 mm, 9 guns cal. 28 mm, 8 guns cal. 20 mm and 6 depth bomb launchers.

The USS “Juneau” is another wreck discovered by the team of Paul Allen and the crew of the R/V “Petrel”. We recently wrote about their locating the wreck of the US aircraft carrier USS “Lexington”.
