Today, Monday 25 November, a World War II landmine was removed from the Szczecin-Świnoujście fairway. The action of removing and neutralising the dangerous find was carried out by mariners of the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla.

Found at a depth of 12 metres, the object was identified as a British Mark VI airborne naval mine. The dangerous find weighed 900 kg and contained a charge of 400 kg of explosive. Finding the mine is the aftermath of coming across the Tallboy bomb, which we wrote about earlier. Searching the area near the bomb, other dangerous objects were found.

The removal and neutralisation of the mine was undertaken using the Mine Divers Group from the 12th minesweeper Squadron and the ORP “Flaming” vessel from the 13th minesweeper Squadron. Due to the high risk, many military and civilian entities cooperated in the action.

The British Tallboy bomb mentioned earlier is still to be retrieved. It is the largest unexploded ordnance discovered in recent years and the object posing the greatest threat. Therefore, it is not surprising that preparations for the action have already lasted for many weeks.
