Underwater archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, while exploring the waters of Lake Biskupinskie, have found many interesting artefacts, providing wonderful evidence of the rich and unusual history of the surrounding area.

According to the information portal of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, the objects found by the researchers included fragments of prehistoric and early medieval pottery, a spearhead from the Bronze Age, a fragment of an ornament in the form of a slipper, and underwater structures. The finds were made in the waters of Lake Biskupińskie and on twin sites in the Pałuki region.

This archaeological site near Biskupin is one of the best known prehistoric sites in Poland. Research in this area has been carried out for decades, but as we can see, the water still hides many secrets. Today, thanks to the efforts of researchers from the Centre for Underwater Archaeology of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and the Archaeological Museum in Biskupin, we can learn more about the fragments that make up this extraordinary historical puzzle.

There is no denying that we are extremely lucky and living in a golden age of underwater discoveries. The equipment and technology available, combined with the knowledge, allow us to carry out research we could only dream of a few years ago.

The scientists started with aerial photos, which made it possible to create accurate models of the area, while hydroacoustic research made it possible to map the bottom of the lakes. Geophysical research was a valuable complement, as it allowed archaeologists to “look” beneath the surface of the ground in a non-invasive way – we read on the information portal of the Nicolaus Copernicus University

Among the artefacts found underwater, a Bronze Age spearhead and a Bronze Age nailhead ornament are particularly noteworthy and have been described by archaeologists as spectacular. After the search was completed, it was time to analyse and work with the collected research material, and with the arrival of spring we can expect another expedition and who knows? Maybe even more interesting underwater findings?

The project “Determination of the range and inventory of unrecognized parts of defensive settlements of Lusatian ashlar fields in Pałuki” is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Researchers want to check the range of the settlement of the Lusatian culture of ashlar fields in Biskupin and four other similar settlements in Pałuki. The project will continue next year.
