Freediving legend and still active competitor William Trubridge set a new world record in the Free Immersion – FIM competition on Sunday! The New Zealand native diver reached a depth of 122 meters while diving at Deans Blue Hole in the Bahamas, home to one of the biggest freediving competitions in the world – Vertical Blue 2016!

The New Zealander thus improved his own achievement and the record of 121 metres, which he set in 2011. The result from this year’s competition is already William Trubridge’s sixteenth world record. It took him 2 minutes and 15 seconds to descend to the required depth, and the whole attempt was completed in 4 minutes and 24 seconds. As the athlete himself admitted, the dive was not the easiest one and caused him a lot of difficulties.

“I had a beautiful dip and in that respect everything went very well. The problems came at the bottom when I tried to attach the marker to my leg. The ascent was just awful. I lost the composure and concentration that I need for such a deep dive. Simply put, when going down to such depths, in my head I have to be in the right place, and because of the problems with the marker this element was missing. Because of this I didn’t have the usual calmness and confidence. I was even worried that a solid blackout (the term for a faint encountered in freediving or underwater hockey – ed.) might hit me when I surfaced.” – said Trubridge afterwards.

When Trubridge finally surfaced there was a momentary silence among the people gathered around him, which was only the prelude to an outburst of enormous joy, applause and congratulations. The record holder’s parents, David and Linda Trubridge, were also there, so the plunge and the record were very special for the diver and all those supporting him.

“For ten years we lived on a yacht. The sea was our home and the ocean for William was his garden and playground. So it’s not surprising that doing this kind of thing made sense to him.” – David Trubridge said when questioned by journalists. In turn, his wife added: “It’s great to see William doing what he does best.”

But that’s not the end of the excitement surrounding the 2016 Vertical Blue competition, with William Trubridge attacking another world record tomorrow. Will it be his seventeenth scalp in the collection? We will find out very soon!
