Lobster Leuci from Italy and Nataliia Zharkova from Ukraine took first places in the International Authentic Big Blue freediving competition, held in Amorgos, Greece, for the second year running.

The competition ran from 16 to 23 September and had a unique backdrop as it coincided with the 30th anniversary of the cult film ‘The Big Blue’. It was this production that put Amorgos on the freediving map.

A nice touch was during the closing ceremony of the event, the granting of honorary citizenship of Amorgos to the French composer Eric Serra, who wrote the soundtrack for the film. The ceremony was presided over by Mayor Nicolas Fasteriera.

Sixty-four athletes from 18 countries took part in the competition. They competed in three disciplines – constant weight with fins (CWT), constant weight without fins (CNF) and free immersion (FIM). During the week of competition, 13 new national records were set.

Lobster Leuci, with a total of 228 points, took first place among men for the second time in a row. He was followed by Piero Giobbi with 214 points and Yannis Yaginis who scored 196 points.

Among the ladies, Zharkova’s 223 points allowed her to take first place – also for the second time in a row. Lena Balta of Serbia was second with 175 points and Hyemin Kim of Korea was third with 150 points.
