On 2-3.12.2016 in the Sport and Recreation Centre in Rybnik, the Silesian Barbour Cup in Freediving was held. Despite the fact that Freediving is not a very popular discipline, it has still developed on an unprecedented scale in Poland. We can boast of a great team, which dominates even at the world championships. This year’s edition of the St. Barbara’s Cup was on a very high level, and the fight was extremely fierce.

The competition was held in three competitions:

DYN – dynamic in fins / flippers (the competitor is to swim the longest possible distance under water),
DNF – dynamic without fins,
STA – static holding of breath (the competitor is to hold their breath for as long as possible underwater).

In order to score points in the general classification, participants had to compete in all competitions.

In the competition took part representatives of the Academic Underwater Club KRAB AGH working at the Underwater Activities Committee: Radosław Furmański, Kamil Kloch, Kamil Selwa, Krzysztof Fus, Marek Połomski and coach Roman Walczak. Despite their short experience (they started training last year), they are already trying to get used to the competition and mark “KRAB’s” presence on the Polish free diving scene.

Kamil Kloch did fantastically at the competition, taking 11th place (DNF 115m DYN107m STA 4:32). Great result was also achieved by Krzysztof Fus, who managed to swim as much as 130m in DYN. Marek Połomski, in turn, turned out to be the best in statics and held his breath for over 5 minutes.

The competitors fought until the end, which unfortunately cost them three blackouts (loss of consciousness by the competitor, in which case the attempt is not scored).

Strong will showed Kamil Selwa, who almost broke his own record in DNF, and Krzysiek Fus, who lacked only half a second to correctly perform the procedure necessary to pass the competition.

Congratulations on your start and thank you for the wonderful emotions.

Radosław Furmanski
