Larson went on his sentimental journey to Grand Cayman, in the Caribbean Sea, to see the distinctive vessel again. The USS “Kittewake” ship made history by finding and fishing out the data recorder from the space shuttle Challanger in 1986.
Pete Larson served on the “Kittewake” as engineer from 1986 to 1989. He was also part of the crew that participated in the ship’s last voyage to Grand Cayman. Then in 1994, the vessel was withdrawn from service with the US Navy.
During this sentimental journey, Larson was able to see for himself that the old “Kittewake” has not been forgotten, but is living a new life, serving as a refuge for local fauna and being one of the most valuable and visited tourist attractions.
