The court handed down the verdicts in the “Terra 2” case, where there was an accident while sailing to the wreck of the Wilhelm Gustloff, in which Robert Szlecht died.
After nearly 10 years, verdicts have been reached in the “Terra 2” case, where Poznan diver Robert Szlecht has died. On 28 July 2012, a man went on a dive with a group of friends from which he never returned. The trace of him was lost for the next 7 years, during which the family tried to find out the truth. His remains were found by accident by divers during the exploration of the Wilhelm Gustloff wreck in June 2019.
As it turns out, none of the divers accompanying Szlecht will be held responsible. Already A year ago the prosecution dropped some of the charges in the case of failure to provide assistance to a person in immediate danger of losing life or health and manslaughter. These were the most serious charges, for which the law provides for penalties of up to 3 and 5 years imprisonment respectively.
The investigation did not indicate that any persons contributed to the victim’s death. the proceedings in this regard were discontinued and part of the material was excluded in order to carry out the proceedings on false testimony and falsification of documentation – explained Patryk Wegner, the district prosecutor in Lębork.
However, the participants in the unfortunate trip were still facing charges of false testimony and endangering people searching for the missing Robert Szlecht.
Today we already know that none of the other divers will face punishment. The prosecution explains that the participants of the dive gave explanations in 2012. Therefore, the possible charge of giving false testimony is time-barred. The only person convicted is the organiser of the expedition and the captain of the vessel Kwazar, who was questioned in 2020. The prosecution charged him with two counts of making false statements and certifying untruths. The sentence – a fine of PLN 4.5 thousand.
