The website artificialreef.bc.ca has reported the imminent sinking of the vessel HMCS Annapolis. It will all take place as part of a project led by The Artificial Reef Society of British Columbia (ARSBC) to create an artificial reef near Vancouver, Canada. The sinking operation will be carried out this weekend.

HMSC Annapolis is a 110m long destroyer with a history of service in the Royal Canadian Navy. The ship was commissioned in 1964. In 1982. The destroyer was modernized under the DELEX (Destroyer Life Extension) programme. Finally she was withdrawn from service on 15 November 1996.

Annapolis’ new home will be Gambier Island, or more specifically, Halkett Bay Provincial Marine Park. The long and arduous process of preparing the structure for conversion to an artificial reef will be completed over the weekend. Suffice to say, the ARSBC bought the destroyer back in 2008! So we can imagine how much work it has taken over the last 7 years to complete the whole project.

However, it did not go to amateurs. The Artificial Reef Society of British Columbia holds the record for the number of sunken wrecks, among all non-profit organisations.

The entire ship was cleared of all materials that were hazardous or could contaminate the body of water in order to meet the strict requirements of federal law. As a result, the whole thing was slimmed down by 250 tonnes! Practically only the aluminium superstructure and the steel hull will be sent to the bottom.

“The implementation of the entire project was very complicated, on many different levels. Fortunately, thanks to the efforts made, Vancuver will have a great attraction,” said Howie Robins, president of the ARCBC association.

On its final voyage, HMCS Annapolis will depart Port Graves for neighbouring Halkett Bay. Once anchored, final preparations for the sinking will begin. The sinking itself, if plans are not thwarted by weather, is scheduled for the morning of Saturday 4 April 2015.
