Underwater art gallery behind the Arctic Circle

At the end of February 2021, the world’s first underwater art gallery opened to the public in the waters of the White Sea.

The gallery is located in the waters of one of the bays of the White Sea, near the Russian village of Nilmoguba in Karelia. It is here that the Polar Diving Base-White Sea diving centre has its headquarters.

Underwater divers can admire, among others, photographs taken by Viktor Lyagushkin, which make up the series “Until the ice melts”, with which our readers had the opportunity to get acquainted in one of the archival issues of the magazine DIVERS24 (Article as a reminder can be found at the bottom of the news).

In addition to photography, visitors to the gallery will be able to see biomorphic sculptures, installations and oil works by St Petersburg-based artist Denis Lotarev, which make up the exhibition entitled ‘Deep Freezing’.

Those wishing to visit this unusual gallery have until the thaw arrives. As the ice melts, the gallery will close and the works will return to the surface.
