Two records during the Ojos Diving Expedition 2019!

Marcel Korkuś set two world records during the recently conducted Ojos Diving Expedition 2019. Our compatriot was supported by a team of 3 Argentinians during the expedition to the top of the Andean volcano Ojos del Salado.

The Pole, who was assisted by Argentinians Ulises Kusnezov, Martin Alderete and Eduardo Salas, managed to set a world record for diving at altitude while holding his breath and using diving equipment.

The Ojos Diving Expedition 2019 project lasted 15 days, during which the team reached the lake, situated at an altitude of 6395m, on the still active volcano Ojos del Salado. As well as still being active, the volcano additionally holds the honour of being the second highest mountain in South America and is situated on the border between Argentina and Chile.

In a modest announcement, Marcel Korkuś reported that the thickness of the ice cover was 1.3 m and the water temperature just 3°C.

This year’s expedition was another attempt to set the aforementioned records. The first ascent took place in December 2016, unfortunately Marcel was stopped at an altitude of 6200m by a sudden weather collapse. In turn, the next ascent was conducted in February 2018, unfortunately due to health problems and deteriorating weather the expedition had to be aborted. Fortunately, according to the old adage – what goes around comes around!

On his way to the goal, our compatriot was supported – apart from the mentioned three Argentinian companions – by Garmin Polska and Eversub.
