In Cinega Springs, on the border between the states of Arizona and California, an unusual event took place in the waters of the Colorado River. A man, who decided to go for a little snoorkling, found something at the bottom of the river, which he did not expect and which he will probably not forget for a long time. After all, how often do we find two skeletons drinking beer while relaxing with a mask and a snorkel!

Such a sight must have frozen the blood in the veins of our snoorkler, who as if struck by thunder jumped out of the water and immediately notified the sheriff’s office of the nearby village of La Paz of his find. It didn’t take long for all the possible services to arrive on the scene to explain what had happened in the area and to whom the remains found at a depth of about 12m belonged.

Divers from the fire brigade rushed into the water at the indicated location. After a quick inspection they reappeared with information that caused our snoorkler considerable embarrassment. It turned out that the remains he had found were two artificial skeletons wearing sunglasses, sitting in garden chairs attached to rocks and… drinking beer!

The firefighters used helmet cameras to record the footage, which quickly gained the working title of “tea party”. (translated as “tea party”).

Also found next to the submerged skeletons were the not entirely legible inscription “Bernie” (most likely a reference to the 1989 comedy “Weekend at Bernie’s”) and “dream in the river”. Next to the inscription is also the date 16 August 2014, which in all likelihood is the day the entire installation was sunk by pranksters.

“I don’t think the authors intended to scare anyone. I think they did it to amuse and surprise possible divers. We are not going to launch an investigation to find out who left the fake skeletons on the bottom. These things happen, we get called to false reports all the time. It’s part of the job and we’re not going to make a big deal out of it,” said Officer Curties Bagby.

Employees of the La Paz sheriff’s office are now considering whether to place the fished-out skeletons in front of their office building. As they explain, they want to show that they have a sense of humour, but also to send the message that reckless behaviour very often ends up at their post.

Update:

All the commotion caused in the media by skeletons found at the bottom of the Colorado River caused a couple from Phoenix, responsible for the whole prank, to approach the La Paz sheriff’s office. At first they thought they were going to get in trouble for the whole situation, but the sheriff’s office staff assured them that they were in no danger.
