Another wonderful discovery has been made in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea by archaeologists from Turkey. The researchers managed to locate the wreck of an ancient ship dating back 4000 years! According to the findings so far, the find has been classified as a remnant of the Minoan culture.
Turkish scientists from Dokuz Eylül University’s Marine Sciences Institute, who have been exploring the Gulf of Hisaronu as part of a project since 2007, can boast of another great discovery. This time their booty fell on an ancient trading ship, dating back 4,000 years and belonging to representatives of the Minoan civilisation, one of the oldest civilisations of the Bronze Age.
“The ship, which is 4,000 years old, is the oldest find of its kind ever found in Turkey,” said Prof Abdurrahman Harun Özdaş of Dokuz Eylül University.
Research under the project “Research on Turkey’s Underwater Heritage” has been conducted since 2007. Recently, the whole project has been supported with the amount of 70 thousand Turkish lira (approx. 100 thousand PLN), in order to carry out an inventory of wrecks resting in Turkey’s territorial waters.
“In the course of our work, we not only deal with the wrecks themselves, but we also create a map of the places where ports were once located and ships anchored. Often we also come across various objects from ships. Having a map of such places facilitates later search for the wrecks themselves,” explained Prof. Özdaş.
According to archaeologists, the found wreck is a merchant vessel and definitely belongs to the Minoan civilisation, which operated in the Mediterranean and Aegean between 3650-1400 BC. The vessel most likely sank during a storm, sailing from Crete via Rhodes and Bozburun to the Gulf of Hisaronu.
The scientists did not fail to report that in addition to the wreck, they managed to locate 20 sites with sunken architectural remains of ancient ports and more than 400 anchors dating from the Bronze Age to the Ottoman Empire.
