Tragic shark attack in Egypt

Tragic shark attack in Egypt. Last weekend, a 12-year-old boy and a local guide were seriously injured in an attack by an oceanic whitetip shark in one of the Red Sea’s most popular resorts.

The incident occurred in the waters of the hugely popular Ras Mohammed National Park, south of the tourist mecca resort of Sharm el Sheikh.

A mother and her teenage son were attacked by a shark during a guided dive. As a result of the incident, the 12-year-old boy lost his arm and the dive guide lost his leg. According to the information available, the attacking predator was most likely an oceanic whitetip shark measuring two metres in length.

The park area was closed shortly after the tragic incident. A statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Environment said.

The minister decided to suspend all human activity in the vicinity of the attack site, in line with current practice in similar cases around the world.

The ministry also said that video footage recorded underwater at the site of the attack showed that the shark was behaving abnormally and was hostile to humans.

Although the whole incident is an extraordinary tragedy and creates a macabre image, it should be remembered that shark attacks are extremely rare around the world. Even in the Red Sea, which is extremely busy with diving tourists, there have been very few so far.
