The Royal Norwegian Navy – Sjøforsvaret has removed all torpedoes remaining in the wreckage of the sunken frigate HNoMS “Helge Ingstad”, which sank following a collision, in early November 2018.

The frigate “Helge Ingstad” was one of the Norwegian Navy’s most modern ships and cost over $500,000,000! Today, the wreck of the ship rests in Hjeltefjorden, between the port city of Bergen and the North Sea, where it sank after colliding with another vessel.

Military divers removed about half of the unit’s arsenal of torpedoes last week. They were transported inland where they were detonated at a special storage facility. The other half were detonated on site as they were found to be too unstable to risk transport.

There are still other weapons inside the wreck that will have to be removed before the action to raise the wreck can begin. Whether the frigate will be repaired or scrapped is still unclear and there are no clear statements on the matter.

It is estimated that the work so far since the ship collided with the tanker has already cost half a billion Norwegian kroner. The above amount was made public by Norwegian Foreign Minister Frank Bakke-Jensen.
