The premiere of “The Cave” is getting closer

Based on true events, the makers of ‘The Cave’ set out to tell the compelling story of 12 boys trapped for ten days in a flooded cave and the largest international dive rescue mission ever undertaken. All presented from the perspective of people facing life-or-death decisions and showing extraordinary determination and dedication, which led to a truly Hollywood-style happy ending.

There are several films planned about this unique and most talked-about rescue operation in recent years, but the first, which has already finished filming and will be released on the anniversary of the rescue, is the Thai production ‘The Cave’, by Thai-Irish director Tom Waller, and which involved several of the rescue divers who took part in those events.

Waller said he was inspired to make the film by accounts of the rescue operation as he watched its progress and the struggles of people from all over the world, committed to selflessly helping boys trapped in a slick cave somewhere at the end of the world.

[blockquote style=”2″]”Like everyone else on the planet, I followed the news with great attention. At some point, I simply realised that as a Thai filmmaker, I was in a unique position to try and tell this story to the whole world.” [/blockquote]

The Cave focuses on the spirit of the volunteers carrying out the rescue and the countless personal stories of those involved in the rescue operation. The entire film also features narration from a Thai perspective. More than a dozen people involved in helping the trapped boys agreed to take part in the film.

[blockquote style=”2″]”Everyone was very enthusiastic about the story and the acting wasn’t really needed because there were real rescuers in front of the cameras who simply recreated what they did when rescuing the boys. For everyone it was going back to Tham Luang and experiencing it for the second time.” [/blockquote]

In an attempt to convey the realism of those days, the filmmakers faced many technical and logistical challenges. The recording of the underwater shots in particular was a real challenge, which certainly would not have gone so smoothly had it not been for the fact that a large part of the film crew consisted of very experienced cave divers.

[blockquote style=”2″]”We have managed to recreate the authentic conditions, with poor visibility and light coming only from head torches. In front of the screen you will feel as if you are really in those flooded tunnels together with the rescuers.” [/blockquote]

Most of the shooting was done in various locations in Thailand, including Chiang Rai province, although there were also scenes shot in Ireland, Wales, China, Japan and Hawaii. The crew filmed a number of caves that they felt were suitable to depict the Tham Luang cave.

The film will be released on the first anniversary of the rescue in July 2019.
