The new face of wrecks in the Great Lakes of North America
Listen to this article

The lakes located on the border of the USA and Canada are extraordinary bodies of water, hiding many incredible secrets. Especially for wreck diving enthusiasts. The prevailing conditions in them perfectly preserved the sunken vessels, making the wrecks true time capsules. Now it seems that in the near future we will be able to see many of them in a completely new light.

All because of… a pandemic. Well, maybe not exactly, but it was the reason why the famous American underwater photographer Becky Kagan Schott (amazing! the cover of the latest issue of our magazine!), decided to use her free time to train herself in photogrammetry.

The effect? Astonishing! It’s hard to put it any other way and not be in awe. Becky is known for her stunning photography, but now she’s opening a whole new door where the wrecks she photographs can be brought to the surface and made available to archaeologists, historians and researchers in the form of incredibly precise 3D models.

The model represents the wreck of the brig “Sandusky”, which sank in 1856 and today rests at a depth of 25 metres in the Straits of Mackinac.

Although creating such a detailed model of a single wreck requires an enormous amount of time and work, carrying out several, a dozen or even several dozen dives, taking thousands of photographs and spending many hours at the computer, the result is a true work of art.

Attentive readers have certainly already had the pleasure of reading the article by Mariusz Milka, published in the 13th issue of DIVERS24 Magazine. Mariusz is a high-class specialist in the field of photogrammetry, and his models are acclaimed all over the world. If by any miracle you missed his text, we are posting it below. You will learn more about photogrammetry, but also about an amazing ancient wreck found and explored in Croatia.
