The most dangerous marine predator

For most people, the very name ‘great white shark’ is enough to make them feel uncomfortable. For years, a false image of the shark has been formed in our minds, as a ruthless and brutal killer, ready to attack anything that comes near it.

Unfortunately, we have created this spiral of fear for ourselves. Beginning with Spilberg’s film, Jaws, and continuing through its sequels and subsequent films based on the struggle between defenceless humans and the merciless shark. All this has brought the shark population to the brink of extinction within a few decades.

Even today, despite campaigns to make people aware of how beautiful and wonderful sharks can be, many countries continue to hunt them. Their valuable fins are considered a delicacy in many cultures and parts of the world, and shark fin soup is an important part of tradition.

The statistics on shark attacks are there for all to see, but unfortunately bare numbers are still not enough to change the way we think about and perceive sharks. Unfortunately, because we have less and less time to save this magnificent predator from total extinction.
