Unfortunately, despite months of effort, the British diving team will not be able to send the Arch Royal, a decommissioned aircraft carrier, to the bottom. The magnificent vessel has been bought by a Turkish company, which intends to scrap it.

England’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has sold the Arch Royal for the sum of £3millionto a company that specialises in scrapping giant objects. This is not the first time that a well-deserved British ship will head for Turkey to end up as razor blades.

from such a fate HMS Arch Royal tried to save Michael Byfield, along with a group of friends, led the Wreck the World project. They were making efforts to prepare the aircraft carrier to be sunk and turned into an artificial reef. This would boost tourism to the Devon area and encourage divers from around the world to use the surrounding facilities.

Nor would it be the first wreck to lure tourists around the British Isles. Since 2004. On the seabed near Pymouth rests the ship HMS Scylla, sunk to create an artificial reef.

According to other submitted projects, the aircraft carrier HMS Arch Royal could have become a school, a museum or even… a nightclub! Unfortunately, instead of becoming an interesting place and continuing to do ‘service’ it will go under the knife. The Wreck the World group has already announced that they are looking for another ship to be scuttled.
