The 80-year-old celebrated her birthday by diving the wrecks of Scapa Flow!

Pat Fung, a grandmother of five grandchildren, decided to celebrate her 80th birthday in a unique way. She went wreck diving in the waters of Scotland, where she and her companions explored the World War I wrecks there.

Full of energy and vigour, she had no trouble at all getting into her dry suit and diving down to a depth of 45 metres, where the wreck of the SS “Kronprinz Wilhelm” lies on the seabed near Orkney.

Of course, this was not the first dive the lucky diver has taken. She fell in love with the underwater world for good during a stay in the Maldives. She was 68 at the time and was celebrating her husband’s retirement. It was the immersion in the warm, clear waters of the Indian Ocean that allowed her to catch the diving bug.

Since then, diving has become an integral part of her life and the guiding theme of many trips. Pat Fung has already visited Mexico, the Caribbean and Egypt, going underwater everywhere to enjoy the beauty of the diverse and colourful underwater flora and fauna.

[blockquote style=”2″]”I love the tranquility that is underwater. Plus all the wonderful animals and plants that surround you and that you can admire while experiencing the wonderful feeling of total weightlessness! I often think about the fact that at my age I don’t move as well as I used to, but underwater it doesn’t matter and I am completely free. I feel like a bird, like I can fly!”[/blockquote]

Pat is another great example of how diving can change people’s lives and give them a whole new colour. Most of the people reading these words are already fortunate enough to be able to talk about the magic of the underwater world from their own experience, but perhaps there is someone among your loved ones that you would like to discover this extraordinary world from?
