The target of the dive was the bottom of the Milwaukee Deep, located at a depth of 8648m. Victor Vescovo single-handedly piloted the boat during the debut mission and from the information available we know that everything went smoothly and that Triton’s capabilities are much greater. The next step for the Five Deep Expedition is the South Sandwich Trench, which has a maximum depth of 8428m.
[blockquote style=”2″]”It was great to be on the real bottom of the Atlantic Ocean for the first time ever. We wanted to show the technical capabilities of our underwater vehicle, which we believe is currently the deepest in the world.” – said Vescovo.[/blockquote]
There is currently only one boat in use that has crossed the 7000 metre mark and that is the Chinese Jiaolong vehicle. In the past, of course, we remember vehicles that reached much greater depths, but both James Cameron’s boat and the bathyscaph used by Jaques Piccard and Don Walsh to reach the bottom of the Mariana Trench have ended their service.
The submarine Triton 36000 was three and a half years in the making. Carrying out a dive to the bottom of the Puerto Rican Trench was her maiden voyage and baptism of fire. Now it’s time for more challenges, as part of the Five Deep Expedition.
Vescovo himself hopes that the mission his team has set out on will provide new information about the oceans and their inhabitants. After all, the deepest places on Earth still offer more questions than answers and are a great field for exploration.
The next dive, to the bottom of the South Sandwich Trench, will be conducted early next year.
