Wildlife Conservation Society activists, after 18 months of investigation, have led to the release of two whale sharks that were being held in special enclosures and were about to be sold to a water theme park in China. It was all made possible thanks to the tremendous effort and commitment of investigative photojournalist Paul Hilton.

Thanks to the support of the Indonesian police, it was possible to efficiently establish where the animals were captured and where they are currently being held. Specially constructed pens were located on Ambon Island, where they awaited transport to their final destination, a water theme park in China.

Informed by the Wildlife Conservation Society, police discovered a number of tropical fish on site in addition to the sharks. Fortunately, the whale sharks were not harmed in any way and were released after a short time.

The illegal trade in endangered wild creatures is one of the most dangerous and damaging ‘industries’ in the world. In this respect it is second only to the international trade in weapons and drugs, and its value is estimated at $7-26 billion. Statisticians calculate that over the past 40 years, 52% of wild creatures on Earth have disappeared, mainly as a result of human activity.

What seems most shocking about the wildlife trade is that the subject is ignored by both the media and the authorities in most countries. People see the results of these activities in the form of products made from ivory, skins and aquariums full of tropical fish, but they do not think about where it all comes from and how many wild creatures lose their lives in the process. This has contributed to a situation where species extinction is now 1000 times faster than normal and, according to scientists, the world is heading for a sixth mass extinction.
