Terrifying encounter between freediver and white shark

Callum Stewart experienced a moment of horror when, during a free dive, he came face to face with a great white shark that wanted to see what its fins tasted like. The whole incident took place in Auastralia in the waters of Wollongong’s Five Islands.

The clock showed 9.00am when the seals appeared in the water. There’s nothing more beautiful than being able to commune with wild marine fauna, especially as a freediver who isn’t slung about with masses of equipment and doesn’t release clouds of bubbles that can scare off the more timid individuals.

Probably similar thoughts were going through Callum Stewart’s head when, at a depth of 5 metres, something nudged him in the back… Probably it was one of the seals, the urchin wanting to play. After all, how many times have we seen similar scenes captured on video? This time, though, it was something bigger and much more dangerous than a seal.

[blockquote style=”2″]”I turned my head and realised it was not a seal but a shark. It made a 180 degree turn and looked in my direction again. At that moment I realised I was in trouble and in serious danger. The most amazing memory I have of that dive is the moment I looked into the creature’s black, dead eyes and wondered, is this all going to end like this for me, or is it over for me?[/blockquote]

It is hard to be surprised by the 28-year-old’s reaction, after all, meeting a 3.5-metre white shark on his underwater trail could probably provoke a similar reaction in anyone. Especially when we can stay underwater for a very limited time.

[blockquote style=”2″]”I was mesmerised by the beauty of this predator, and after a while I realised it was holding my fin in its mouth.”[/blockquote]

As he explained, he didn’t even notice when he lost his metre-long fin, which appeared in his teeth as an unexpected companion on a morning dive. Coralie Fleming, who accompanied Stewart, had a completely different perspective on the situation.

[blockquote style=”2″]”I saw the shark open its huge mouth and clamp down on Callum’s leg. For a moment I thought the shark had ripped him in half! I was terrified, but after a while I realised that the shark had only snatched his fin.”[/blockquote]

The Freediver got away with it because the shark did not attack, but just decided to satisfy its curiosity. It often happens that in such situations very serious injuries occur, sometimes even resulting in death. Unfortunately, the shark’s jaws, with their razor-sharp teeth, can cause serious injuries even when “examining” an object.

Despite the moments of horror, when everyone had cooled down, they considered the whole event to be an amazing and extremely beautiful experience. The dive was captured on camera by the third participant, Mitchell Scanlan-Bloor.
