In 2009. In 2009, the Town Hall of Hel, or more precisely the Mayor of Hel, in cooperation with the local diving community and following proven examples from around the world, carried out an unprecedented project of sinking the Navy liaison vessel ORP “Bryza”. This year is the 5th anniversary of this event and we hear that there are attractions planned for this occasion.

The aim of the whole operation was to create a An “artificial reef” and safe training facility, which was then to be made available to the diving community. As a result, on the Bay of Gdańsk there appeared a place ideal for adepts of wreck diving and a great magnet for underwater tourists.

The cost of the entire investment amounted to 240tys. PLN. So far, this is the only project of this type in our country which has been successfully completed. It is also worth noting that the unit has been prepared in a very careful manner, with concern for the safety of visitors and the environment.

All equipment that could have a negative impact on the environment was removed, and all liquids and other elements that could pose a risk were disposed of. In turn, the ship’s structure was prepared so that tours and diving training could be carried out in a safe and controlled manner.

What is most interesting, however, and may raise the hopes of all wreck divers, is the fact that there is a preliminary project to bring in the vicinity of the wreck of the “Bryza”, the wreck of a submarine ORP “Kujawiak”. Surely, the place would become even more popular, especially that we can swim to the wreck “from the fin”.

Let’s hope that soon we will find confirmation of this information in concrete actions, and slowly we will witness the emergence of another locations, created with divers in mind. Anyway, a big applause for those responsible for sinking the “Bryza”!
